LED Vehicle Lighting Installation Guide

Practical guidance for fitting SpectrumTek LED light bars, spotlights, and controllers safely and correctly.

Before You Start

Every SpectrumTek product ships with technical documentation and wiring diagrams, but a few basics apply across the entire range regardless of which light bar or spotlight you're fitting.

Tools and Parts You'll Need

  • Wiring harness matched to your product (12V or 24V system)

  • Deutsch DT connectors for a secure, weatherproof join

  • Relay sized correctly for your light bar's current draw

  • Appropriate fuse rated to protect the circuit

  • Mounting brackets suited to your vehicle or vessel

Electrical System Basics

Getting the wiring right protects both your new lighting and your vehicle's existing electrical system.

12V and 24V Applications

Confirm your vehicle's system voltage before ordering accessories. Passenger vehicles and most 4x4s run 12V, while commercial trucks and some agricultural and defence vehicles run 24V. Fitting the wrong-rated components risks poor performance or damage.

Relay and Fuse Sizing

A relay prevents your light bar from drawing current directly through a switch, which extends the life of your electrical components. Fuse sizing should match the rated current draw of your specific product, always found in the technical documentation included with your order.

Mounting Your LED Light Bar or Spotlight

Beam pattern and mounting height work together. A light bar mounted too low will lose reach; mounted too high, it can create glare for oncoming traffic.

  • Use brackets matched to your light bar's dimensions

  • Check clearance before drilling any mounting points

  • Angle spotlights slightly downward to reduce glare

  • Secure all wiring away from moving parts and heat sources

Waterproofing and Connections

Every SpectrumTek product carries IP67, IP68, or IP69K certification, but that protection depends on connections being sealed correctly during fitting. Use weatherproof Deutsch DT connectors rather than standard bullet connectors, and route wiring loops to prevent water pooling at connection points.

Testing After Installation

Once wired, test each light individually before final assembly. Check beam alignment, confirm no interference with other on-board electronics, and inspect all connections for a secure, weatherproof seal.

When to Get Professional Help

Defence, emergency services, and commercial fleet installations often benefit from professional fitting, particularly where EMC compliance around radio and communications equipment is critical. Our technical team is available to advise before you begin.
